貧乏ゆえ車検切れを機に車を手放し、以後旅の移動手段としては人力（徒歩と自転車）以外では、青春18きっぷにより鈍行列車を利用することになった。
そうして始めた最初の旅で文字通り骨を折り、文字通り痛い目にあったわけだが、自分の自由にはならないものの鉄道旅行もなかなか良い。
しかし地方においては、この先鉄道事業の発展は到底望めず、地域の足として利便性が高まることもないだろうと実感した。
鈍行なんか乗るんじゃねえよ、とJRのダイヤはあからさまに言っている。
本数は少なく、乗換え時間は短い。
乗換え駅で延々待たされるか、おちおちトイレにもいけない慌ただしさ。JR四国などは車内にトイレがないから下痢にでもなったらアウトだ。
地方の活性化だの権限委譲だのいうが、公共交通という一点だけを見てもこんな地方の現状では、大都市集中に歯止めがかかるわけがない。
電車がなければ車に乗ればいいじゃないとマリー・アントワネットは言うかも知らんが車ほど面倒な足もない。核家族化、少子高齢化が進めば、車が運転できなくなった老人はどこにも行けなくなる。
こういう点からも、景観なんかどうでもええんやっていう。じゃんじゃん開発、ばら撒き行政。
